Pret a Manger (Ready to Eat) or “Pret” as the Brits call it is a 350-store chain that opened a franchise in our Morningside Heights neighbourhood, much to my chagrin, at first.

Only four blocks north of the the hot pot venue, Junzi is world’s away in that it is a “concept” Chinese restaurant, translated for American palates; think a Chinese Sweetgreen or Digg In. The founders, Yale University graduates, opened their first “fast casual” Junzi kitchen, now hugely popular, in New Haven.

Any vegetable matter comes to you in the crepe batter (made in part from mung bean flour), which has a greenish cast, a slightly musky taste and is a thing of beauty. Bits of cilantro, scallion and also sesame seeds swirl within folds of yellow and white eggy pancake to create a pattern you might be happy to wear on a scarf. In fact wrap this around my neck, and I’ll eat my way through it
